âIt looksâ¦.um, see through.â Waverly smoothed her hands over the fine lace, floor-length gown. The black satin bra and panties were visible through the transparent fabric.
âTom Ford, darling. Itâs stunning,â insisted the stylist who Viktor had sent to attend to her. Beverly Stacco. Personal shopper to the stars. âYou do realize the dress youâre wearing costs several thousand dollars? Itâs the best of the best. Perfecto. Youâll be the belle of the ball tonight.â
âWow. Okay. Um, really, I would have been fine with something less expensive. Maybe a dress from Macyâs? Theyâve always got a sale going.â
âPfft. Viktor is the epitome of style. You must match.â The tall brunette gestured to a vanity set. Dressed in a pair of embellished jeans with a black, ruffled, chiffon blouse, she teetered around the room, her crystal-studded boots tapping about the wooden floor. The diminutive but headstrong woman rummaged through her suitcase and retrieved a tan linen bag. âNow. Come sit at the mirror. Letâs try the shoes.â
A silver pair of bootie-style, open-toed, dress sandals dangled from Beverlyâs fingers. Netting, adorned with tiny crystals, stretched over the leather. âThese are perfect. Rene Caovilla. Snakeskin. Love them.â
Waverly sat down onto the black velvet settee, careful not to tug on the dress. âHow long have you worked for Viktor?â
âSince the sixties,â she commented, slipping a sandal onto one of her feet.
âThe sixties?â Waverly quickly did the math and attempted to conceal her surprise. The woman appeared far younger than her age. Vampire. âYou must be closeâ¦having worked together for such a long time.â
âYes, well. I was turned in the twenties. Met him in Vegas. Iâve done this and that over the years but somehow ended up styling for him. Itâs easier when heâs actually in the city.â She buckled the last sandal and smiled. âTheyâre dope, yeah?â
âTheyâre beautiful. So sparkly. Letâs see if I can walk in them,â she said with a slight laugh. While Waverly loved a beautiful pair of heels, she spent most of her time in flip flops. She stood, finding the shoes surprisingly comfortable. âThey feel really good. Thank you.â
âAll right then. Go to the mirror and let me check you over,â Beverly ordered.
Waverly stared at her reflection. Her long blonde hair had been braided up the sides, wavy locks curling down her back. Blood-red lipstick stained her lips, a hint of blush on her cheekbones.
âYou look gorgeous.â Beverly clapped her hands together. âMagnifique!â
âThank you. It sounds stupid, but Iâm a little nervous about tonight,â Waverly admitted, not sure why sheâd shared her emotions with the stranger. âItâs just, well, you know, sometimes it helps to feel like youâre put together even if youâre about to unravel.â
âItâs going to be okay,â Beverly assured her. âYouâre human but you must have great strength if Viktor is keeping you on. Youâll be all right. Trust me. Viktor wonât let any of them hurt you. Itâs just a party. Walk into the room like you own that shit.â
âFake it till you make it?â Waverly nodded.
